Skype Music Lessons

Dear Parents/Students,

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and following government advice, we have taken the decision to close the I-Play Music Centre since Monday the 23rd of March 2020 until further notice. This decision has been taken, along with other educational establishments, to help prevent the further spread of the virus and help with the containment within our community.

As with many educational establishments around the country, we still feel it is vitally important that all our students still receive their musical education, taught at the highest standard, which we have always provided here at I-Play Music. We will continue to follow government advice, and in-line with other educational establishments, in moving our teaching from one-to-one lessons at the I-Play Music Centre to an online system for the continued education of all our students. However, unlike many establishments, this will be more than adding resources to our website for students to access and complete. We will be continuing to provide one-to-one lessons for all our students via online video calling software.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT MY LESSONS?

In short, the main effect this will have on all our students’ lessons is simply the location. Rather than traveling to the I-Play Music Centre, your lessons will be in your own home via video call. You will still receive the same level of teaching with the same tutor following the same I-Play Music syllabus as before. Your lesson timetable will not change nor will the content or practice tasks you receive.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?

Following this letter will be some instructions on how to set up your rehearsal space depending on your instrument. Regardless of your instrument, you will need:

● A device (computer, phone or tablet) with a Skype account set up using the email provided to us in your Application and Registration document

● Internet access

● Your Rockschool Grade Book or sheet music purchased from the Rockschool website

● Your instrument

Students under the age of 18 must at all times, have a parent or responsible adult present during every online lesson.

WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH THE ROCKSCHOOL GRADED EXAMS?

At the moment all the information we have received from Rockschool is that the examinations for this period have been deferred. This means that everyone who has been entered for an exam at this time will still take them, just at a later date. As soon as we have more information from Rockschool regarding when this might be, we will pass that on to you via our newspage.

WHAT ABOUT THE CONCERT AND PRESENTAION AWARDS?

Following government advice regarding public gatherings we have taken the decision to postpone this year’s Concert and Presentation Awards indefinitely. This is not a decision we have taken lightly, we know how much all the students (and tutors) enjoy this yearly event. However, with the current climate and uncertainty around how long COVID-19 will last for, it would not be best practice to host this event at the scheduled time this year. We do however, have some exciting projects for students to work on during the summer term in lieu of band rehearsals.

Thank you for your understanding during these unprecedented times, we look forward to continuing your musical education in our new format! If you have any questions, please do contact us on (0) 208 935 5447

Setting up your space for online lessons – Electric Bass, Guitar and Vocals

YOU WILL NEED:

● A device with a stable internet connection (computer, phone or tablet) and video calling capabilities logged into a Skype account set up using the email address we have on file

● Your electric bass, guitar and amp and microphone

● Your Rockschool Grade Book or sheet music purchased from the Rockschool website

● The ability to receive resources from your tutor. This can be the same device as you are using for video calling if the screen is large enough of a separate device if not.

● Something to play backing tracks from out loud

SETTING UP YOUR LESSON SPACE:

Where possible you should choose to have your lesson in a room with few distractions, somewhere other members of your household will not need to access during your lesson time.

Make sure your bass / guitar is tuned properly and you can clearly hear what you’re playing as well as the backing tracks needed.

Set up your video calling device so that your tutor can clearly see what both your hands are doing.

Set up your music stand or something to hold your book / sheet music where you can clearly see it.

DURING YOUR VIDEO CALL:

Make sure you:

● Can clearly hear and see your tutor

● Listen carefully to what your tutor is saying to you and follow their instructions

● Try to avoid talking over your tutor. This is more important during video lessons as it is not always possible to hear everything being said whilst you’re talking.
